[ARCHIVED] Eagle Days return to Lake Springfield Jan. 21-22

Eagle Days return to Lake Springfield Park and the Springfield Conservation Nature Center Saturday, Jan. 21, and Sunday, Jan. 22, giving spectators the opportunity to learn more about eagles and other migratory birds near Lake Springfield during the winter months.

The annual event brings eagle-spotting opportunities to Lake Springfield Boathouse, 5324 S. Kissick Ave., Springfield. Participants are invited to bring binoculars, telephoto-lens cameras or small telescopes, or use scopes provided by the Missouri Department of Conservation. Guided eagle spotting, with Park Board and Conservation Department staff, takes place 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday.

Lake Springfield Park also includes the 3/4-mile James River Greenway Trail and the 1/4-mile Greater Ozarks Audubon Trail, both perfect for spotting eagles and other birds.

Eagle Days also bring indoor eagle programs to the Missouri Department of Conservation’s Springfield Conservation Nature Center, 4601 S. Nature Center Way, Springfield. Programs feature Phoenix, a bald eagle, and Aquila, a golden eagle, both from Dickerson Park Zoo, along with zoo staff and volunteers. Programs begin hourly from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.  Sunday’s programs begin hourly from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Programs are an hour long.

The Eagle Days event is sponsored by the Missouri Department of Conservation, Dickerson Park Zoo and the Springfield-Greene County Park Board. All programs are free and open to the public.
