Westport Pool remains closed due to major water leak

Springfield, Mo. — As the Springfield-Greene County Park Board's outdoor pools open for the season on Saturday, Westport Pool will remain closed until further notice, pending investigation of a major water leak.

Park Board staff have spent the last several days filling and maintaining the pool for opening. However, staff discovered the pool is losing water and cannot reach the minimum capacity for the pool’s filtration system to operate. The cause and location of the leak is not known. Jon Carney, Superintendent of Operations for the Park Board, says the easy-to-reach areas have all been inspected, but the source of the leak remains unknown.

“We’ve been working to diagnose this since Sunday, and we suspect there is a leak in the return lines, deep underground,” said Carney, adding that the pool must be drained to further inspect the underground system.

The pool will remain closed while diagnosis and repairs are made. The exact length of the closure is not yet known, but will likely last more than a week. Updates will be posted at Facebook.com/WestportParkPool.

Westport Pool was built in 1977 and renovated in 2012. While the renovation changed the layout of the pool, some of the underground infrastructure dates back to the 1970s.

As repairs are made at Westport, five other outdoor pools remain open: Fassnight, Grant Beach, McGee/McGregor Wading Pool, Meador and Silver Springs. Pools are open daily 1-6:30 p.m. (McGee-McGregor operates on a modified schedule) with staggered closed days each week. A full schedule is posted at http://parkboard.org/aquatics.

Daily outdoor pool admission is $3/adults, $2.50/youth and seniors. Discount Splash & Sizzle admission takes place daily after 5:30p.m., $1 for all ages or free with a canned food item donation, benefiting Ozarks Food Harvest. Discount coupon books and season passes are available.

Fassnight, Grant Beach and Meador pools are also open Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, 1-6:30 p.m., for discount Splash & Sizzle, with all-day $1 admission, or free with a canned food donation, benefiting Ozarks Food Harvest.

After the holiday weekend, all outdoor pools follow their regular schedule through Sunday, Aug. 11. Each pool is open six days a week, 1-6:30 p.m., with maintenance days staggered Monday through Wednesday, and all outdoor pools open Thursday through Sunday. A full schedule is at ParkBoard.org/Aquatics.

McGee-McGregor Wading Pool also opens for the season Saturday, following its own schedule: Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1-4 p.m., and Sunday, 1-4 p.m. Admission there is free, but the pool is for kids age 6 and under with a parent only.

The Jordan Valley Park Ozarks Stream and Fountain is also currently operating daily 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
