Springfield, MO — Participants have just less than month left to register for Springfield’s Thanksgiving Day tradition, the 25th annual Turkey Trot 5K Run-Walk. The event, now celebrating its silver anniversary, takes plate Thanksgiving morning, Thursday Nov. 28, 8 a.m. in downtown Springfield.
Turkey Trot is Springfield’s largest timed 5K run/walk of the year and the largest Thanksgiving Day 5K in Missouri, attracting more than 7,500 participants in 2018. Turkey Trot is held rain, snow or shine.
Discount Early Bird registration, available through Friday, Nov. 22, is $20 for adults, $15 for kids 12 and under. Register online or print a registration form at ParkBoard.org/TurkeyTrot. After Nov. 22, registration is available on-site only at Springfield Expo Center, and the price goes up to $30/adults, $25/kids. Registration includes a long-sleeve t-shirt with the silvery 25thAnniversary Turkey Trot logo, and a race bib with timing device.
New this year, folks who are out of town for Thanksgiving may register as a Traveling Trotter and receive their Turkey Trot t-shirt by mail. Traveling Trotters are not elibigle for race bibs, race time results, prizes or medals. Registration is online only, and the deadline is Nov. 11.
Race participants may register for one of four categories, each with staggered start times:
Elite- Participants have completed a sanctioned 5K in the last 18 months within at least 24 minutes for females, 21 minutes for males. For safety, no dogs or strollers are allowed in this category. Elite starts first.
Runner- Participants will run or jog a 5K at a consistent pace without walking breaks. For safety, no dogs or strollers are allowed in this category. Runners start second, about a 90 seconds after the Elite start.
Walker/Family- Ideal for groups, families with strollers or small children, or anyone wishing to walk all or part of the route. Walker/Family starts third.
Dog- Participants running, jogging or walking with dogs. Strollers and groups are also allowed in this category. Dogs must be on a leash. Please pick up after your dog. Pet Category starts last.
No matter which race category, participants’ individual race times begin when they cross the starting line and end at the finish line.
A $3.25 service charge is added to each online registration. Mailed or hand-delivered registrations have no service charge, but must be postmarked by Nov. 19. Early Bird registration closes at 5 p.m. Nov. 22.
Proceeds from the event benefit the Springfield-Greene County Park Board Youth Scholarship Fund and the Developmental Center of the Ozarks. Turkey Trot also serves as one of the largest one-day food drives for Ozarks Food Harvest,which collected more than 9,000 lbs. of food at the event in 2018.
