Springfield, MO — The Springfield-Greene County Park Board begins reconstruction of the north road at Springfield Botanical Gardens at Nathanael Greene/Close Memorial Park Wednesday, July 11, limiting vehicle access to the north and east side of the park for two weeks.
The north road, running along the park’s northern edge, is being rebuilt to accommodate two-way traffic on the road, improve drainage in the area and repair basic wear and tear on the existing road. The project will address park safety concerns as well as improve traffic flow on busy days in the park.
During reconstruction, vehicle access will be unavailable to Mizumoto Japanese Stroll Garden, Gray-Campbell Farmstead, the Nathanael Greene and Japanese Garden picnic pavilions, and the north and east portions of the park. All attractions and gardens remain open and are accessible by foot, bicycle and parks maintenance vehicles. Access to the Botanical Center parking lot and the west-side parking lots remains open.
Springfield Botanical Gardens will offer increased solar tram tour hours in the park Saturday, July 14, and Sunday, July 15, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tram tours are free and handicap accessible, and are an easy way to access the park's east side.
Assistant Parks Director Miles Park said the current road dates back to the park’s development in the 1970s.
“The increasing growing popularity of the park has made it necessary to address infrastructure that is no longer adequate to accommodate park visitors,” said Park.
The contractor is Blevins Asphalt Construction Company, Inc., The project is anticipated to take two weeks, weather permitting. The $106,000 project is covered by Parks operating funds.
A separate construction project is taking place outside the entrance to the park. Springfield Public Works is constructing a shared pedestrian/bicycle path along Scenic Avenue, from Battlefield Road to Nathanael Greene/Close Memorial Park. Portions of Scenic are closed during construction, but access to the park will be maintained throughout the project.
